Azerbaijani expert: Armenia waits for "genocide" anniversary to voice
its attitude on Madrid principles
13 March 2010 [13:25] - Today.Az
Day.Az interview with Azerbaijani political expert Rasim Agayev.
In your opinion, why Armenia is slow to voice its consent to the
updated Madrid principles that Azerbaijan has already approved?
There is only one reason. Armenia is waiting for April 24, anniversary
of the "Armenian genocide" hoping that the U.S. Congress will
recognized it and a result change attitude towards the
Armenian-Azerbaijani and Armenian-Turkish disputes. Armenia has taken
a pause to wait for a symbolic date when the world will honor the
victims of the `Armenian genocide.'
As we saw in case of Sweden, this process has already begun. In fact,
Armenia wants to return to negotiations with Turkey and Azerbaijan
with a support of countries including the United States. Thus, on
domestic background, having such success, Armenian President Serzh
Sargsyan will have an opportunity to secure a compromise solution to
the Karabakh conflict.
Turkish President Abdullah Gul accused the Swedish parliamentarians,
who made a decision in favor of the "Armenian genocide" several days
ago, of incompetence saying that such decisions have no significance.
Do you share this opinion?
I totally agree with this view. The Swedish Parliament has little
information on events that occurred in 1915 in the Ottoman Empire.
Moreover, this information is collected from the Armenian sources.
Having studied the document on "Armenian Genocide" submitted to the
U.S. Congress, I can say that it contains ridiculous facts from the
Armenian sources.
In general, it was inappropriate for the American parliamentarians to
discuss such a document. For example, it includes a statement by the
fascist Fuhrer Adolf Hitler, in which he recalled that "the Turks
massacred Armenians". These words of Hitler can be found nowhere
except for the Armenian sources.
Generally, the U.S. undertook to protect Armenians after the Armenian
revolt in Ottoman cities of Erzurum and Van. After the rebellion, in
which Armenians killed many Turks, the Americans set up a howl and
raised the issue of "Armenian genocide". About the same time,
Washington had an idea of creating an Armenian state on Turkish
territory. But after Armenian state was formed and it entered the
USSR, Washington understandably lost interest in Armenians, which once
again aroused in 1970s when Soviet-American broke out with a renewed
force. It should be noted that Armenians successfully played the role
assigned to them by Washington in the collapse of the Soviet Union.
As for the bill on recognition of the `Armenian genocide" in the U.S.
Congress, I believe that Americans, who massacred indigenous
population of North America and conducted carpet bombing in Vietnam,
Iraq and Afghanistan, have no moral right to discuss developments in
the Ottoman Empire.
In your opinion, will Turkey's reaction to recognition of the
`Armenian genocide' by parliaments be even tougher over time or Turkey
will pretend that these decisions have no significance?
Turkey has already done much to expose the Armenian lies in the world.
But now it is time for Turkey to create a broader front to counter the
Armenian aggression and anti-Turkish propaganda in the world.
Azerbaijan must also join this front. We need to coordinate our
actions. Some Arab and European countries may also join it.
The fact that the Swedish parliament adopted the `Armenian genocide"
by a majority of only one vote shows that the country does have
sensible politicians. Germany, the UK and other countries can support
our position.
