STRATEGIC CHANGES IN THE STRATEGY OF PROTECTION OF JAVAKHK ARMENIANS' RIGHTS

A Coordinating Council of Defense of Rights of Javakhk Armenians was
established in 2009 to make the defense of the rights of the Armenian
population of Javakhk more coordinated and effective.
Essential changes have been implemented in the strategy of the struggle
for the rights of Javakhk Armenians, President of the Javakhk Patriotic
Union Shirak Torosyan told a press conference today.
"In the past we were trying to work with the Georgian authorities,
trying to convince them not to violate the rights of their own
citizens. Convinced that it is useless, we are now seeking for ways
to call the attention of international structures to the problems of
Javakhk," Shirak Torosyan said.
"The main requirements are as follows: to give the status of a regional
language to the Armenian, give a legal status to the Armenian Apostolic
Church and return the Armenian Churches to the Georgian Diocese,
stop the legal prosecutions and political harassment against the
political activists of Javakhk," Shirak Torosyan informed.
