  • BAKU: Turkish Opp to appeal Hague re so-called `Armenian genocide'

    APA, Azerbaijan
    March 19 2010

Turkish opposition proposes to appeal International Hague Court
    concerning so-called `Armenian genocide' claims

    [ 19 Mar 2010 19:52 ]

Baku ` APA. Member of the Turkish Parliament from the Republican
People's Party (CHP) Mustafa Shukru Elekdag prepared a detailed legal
document proposing to appeal the International Court concerning the
so-called `Armenian genocide' claims and submitted the document to
President Abdullah Gul, APA reports quoting Turkish Hurriyyet
    newspaper.

The document based on UN Genocide Convention and court decisions
passed on genocide issues offers two ways ` to complain to Hague-based
International Court about the countries which recognized Armenia's
lies about so-called `genocide' or to propose to Armenia to jointly
appeal the International Court for investigation of 1915 events.

Elekdag said the countries recognized Armenian claims took action
against the UN Convention. There should be a court decision which
could determine whether there was a crime or not. The International
Court can be asked to investigate 1915 events in accordance with the
determination of genocide fact by the UN Convention.

If the second version (joint appeal) is preferred, Turkey can not take
unilateral action because international investigation of the conflicts
between the countries should be conducted according to the agreement
by all sides. Armenia should also accept this proposal to appeal the
International Court. Elekdag said Armenia wouldn't accept this
proposal because it had no evidence which could prove the genocide and
after its refusal Turkey would gain political and psychological
    superiority at the international arena.
