YEREVAN, MAY 4, ARMENPRESS: The 23rd four-day forum of the
Parliamentary Assembly of Francophonie of the European region
kicked off today in Yerevan. Over 80 representatives of 20 countries
participate in the event.
At the opening speech Armenian NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan first
expressed gratitude that the assembly has accepted the invitation
of the National Assembly of Armenia to conduct the 23rd forum of the
Parliamentary Assembly of Francophonie in Yerevan. H. Abrahamyan said
that it is a double happiness for Armenian people in regard that the
conduction of the forum in the capital of Armenia coincides with a
very important event; this year Armenia together with all the member
states of the International Organization of Francophonie celebrates
the 40th anniversary of the organization.
Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly reminded that it was in
October 2008 when Armenia received a status of an associated member
stressing that it accepts the common merits of Francophonie and will
contribute to spreading and strengthening of those merits.
"We did not hesitate even a while to apply to the Parliamentary
Assembly of Francophonie for getting a status of an associated member,
and we are sure that the parliamentary diplomacy, the cooperation
established between the parliaments of francophone countries have
a great role and potential for preservation of the all-human merits
assumed by Francophonie - preservation of language-cultural diversity,
consolidation of peace, development of democracy, human rights
defense," head of the Armenian legislative body said.
Jan-Paul Wahl, head of the mission of the Parliamentary Assembly
of Francophonie in the European region, attached great importance
to giving Armenia a status of an associated member, as Armenia
is of great importance for the organization. "Arshile Gorky,
Charles Aznavour, Patrick Devejyan enrich our history and culture
of francophone countries with their activity just in French. The
Armenians and francophone countries have great ties, which are
gradually developing. Our main goal is to establish a multilingual
and multi-culture Europe on the basis of democratic merits," Jan Paul
Wahl said.
Armen Arustamyan, head of the Armenian delegation in the Parliamentary
Assembly of Francophonie, said that he attaches great importance to
strengthening of ties with the organization, as it is connected not
only with the French language, but also with democracy, human rights,
legal state and other merit systems. "Armenia has become an associated
member of the organization, which enables to get involved in the
structure in future," A. Rustamyan said adding that the organization
has many important programs, which will be implemented in our state
as well.
"African and such countries of other continents are involved in this
organization, which do not have any connection with Armenia. So,
one more opportunity is created to establish ties, to present them
our programs and issues," A. Rustamyan said.
