The Linguistic Society of Turkey has published
Armenian-Turkish/Turkish-Armenia dictionary.
Director of the Society, Professor Å~^ukru Haluk Akalyn said in an
interview with Hurriyet that the dictionary was of great interest
in Turkey.
"We are neighbors and have to know each other's languages. Sadly,
for more than 100 years we were unable to publish a more serious
dictionary. In order to fill this gap, we started creating this
dictionary. We are also going to open Department of Armenian Studies
in our universities. There are few those speak Armenian language
among our historians," the Turkish professor said.
The Turkish scholar also noted contribution of Armenian linguists to
development of modern Turkish language.
"The Armenians have a great service in Turkey in development of
the Turkish language. The author of one of the first etymological
dictionary of the Turkish language was Petros Kerestejyan. Another
Armenian linguist Petros Zeki Karapetyan is also the author of a number
of dictionaries of Turkish language. He compiled more than 50 textbooks
to teach Turkish language in the Armenian schools," said the professor.
Talking about future plans, Akalyn noted that they were preparing to
reissue the French-Armenian dictionary published in Istanbul in 1884.
Armenian-Turkish phrasebook will also be published, he added.
