MINISTRY OF ENERGY AND NATURAL RESOURCES PROMISES NEW DISCUSSIONS ON URANIUM PROJECT IN JUNE

ArmInfo. The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources assures that
"Armenian-Russian Mining Company" CJSC, the implementer of the uranium
project in Armenia, is willing to hold new project discussions with
stakeholders in Kapan in the first half of June. This is mentioned
in letter of response Ø 07/ 24.1/ 833-10 issued by the Ministry of
Energy and Natural Resources to Kapan-based "For Ensuring Ecological
Safety and Developing Democracy" NGO, Ecolur reported.
Public expressed anxiety with regards to the project implementation in
Syunik and applied to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources
with a proposal to hold a referendum. In its letter of response
the Ministry says "Armenian-Russian Mining Company" CJSC plans to
continue geological prospecting in 2010 when ores will be tested,
exploration shafts and canals will be conducted.
In its letter the Ministry makes a reference to permit Ø 88 issued to
"Armenian-Russian Mining Company" CJSC that says the permit is issued
to explore uranium reserves with an aim to develop natural resources.
The time period of this permit is from 5 August 2009 to 23 August
2014. Under the letter, the legality of this project is conditioned
by the positive resolution issued by the State Environmental Expert
Committee of the Ministry of Nature Protection of RA numbered BF-78.
In 2009 "Armenian-Russian Mining Company" CJSC already carried out
radiometric and lithogeochemical studies of the samples taken.
