Today, activists from an ad-hoc organization calling itself "We are
the owners of this coty" formed a human chain around a construction
site in downtown Yerevan in an attempt to halt work at the site known
as "Student Garden". Two cafes are being built there.
A dump truck trying to exit the site was turned back when it came upon
the citizen activists determined to halt the further destruction of
Yerevan's green spaces in the name of economic profit for the few.
Wearing gas masks, the activists symbolically sent the message that
Yerevan's air was becoming polluted beyond all norms .
Holding hands, the concerned citizens were resolute in telling those
responsible for such violations that work as usual would not continue
without growing protest by average residents of Yerevan fed-up with
unregulated urban construction.
Steel barriers were humanized by the placing of flowers by the
activists.
Passers-by sign the petition to halt construction at the site.
Young people take the lead to have a park without the ubiquitous cafes.
The protestors placed flowers at the memorial statue to Viktor
Hambardzumyan
