WASHINGTON
US Democrats Betty McKolum, Frank Pallone, Adam Schiff and Tim Wiling
sent a letter to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. They call on
Clinton to take steps to assist Iraqi Armenians who have migrated
after the war in Iraq or have taken refuge in Syria or Jordan, as
reported by "Asbarez". They have proposed to create a fund to help
Iraqi Armenians move to Armenia. The Congressmen mention that Iraqi
Armenians are Christians and are under persecution. The letter is
signed by 16 Congressmen.
According to information provided by the UN, the migrants are facing
serious difficulties. Two years ago, the UN helped give refuge
to a group of Iraqi Armenians in Armenia. The Armenian government
has expressed willingness to the UN to receive all Iraqi Armenian
refugees and has promised to grant them citizenship. In the letter
it is stressed that Washington must back the Armenian government's
program through humanitarian aid, adding that the improvement of the
Iraqi Armenians' situation is favorable for the US as well.
