  • No FBI Agents Arrived In Armenia: General Prosecutor's Office

NO FBI AGENTS ARRIVED IN ARMENIA: GENERAL PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE

    Tert.am
    10.11.10

Armenia's General Prosecutor's Office issued Tuesday a release denying
the recent media reports saying that 8 agents from the United States
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have arrived in Armenia to
conduct an investigation related to the recent disclosure of an
    Armenian crime gang in US.

"The United States law enforcement bodies have not dispatched any
agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation for dealing with
the recently disclosed fraud cases in banking and medical insurance
sectors. In a meeting with Armenia's Prosecutor General on October
21, FBI Legal Attache Kevin Donovan denied Armenian media reports,
saying that no FBI agents have arrived in Armenia. Kevin Danovan is
the US FBI representative in the region who holds his main residence
    in Tbilisi," read the release.

The document further states that the US official expressed his
gratitude to Armenia's General Prosecutor's Office for cooperation
and said his country will apply for mutual legal assistance upon
necessity. To date, Armenia's law enforcement agencies have not
received any request for mutual legal assistance, therefore the media
reports on FBI agents having arrived in Armenia to conduct check-up
are libelous in nature, it said.

"No law enforcement official from any country can carry out
investigative operations on the territory of a foreign state
without a prior agreement with that country's law enforcement
bodies. Armenian and US law enforcement bodies have cooperated in the
past, providing mutual assistance on specific criminal cases. And the
General Prosecutor's Office will provide assistance on this case as
well. But no request in this connection has been received to date,"
    the General Prosecutor's Office said.
