ArmInfo. New types of fish have originated in Lake Sevan, Director
of the Institute of Hydro-ecology and Ichthyology of Armenia Bardukh
Gabrielyan said in a press conference in Yerevan on Friday. Riffle
minnow and rainbow trout are new fish for the lake and may cause as
much damage to the lake's ecosystem as crucian carp that is reproduced
in the same period as the existing fish. In addition, it is their key
rival in the fight for subsistence. In fact, over the last years,
crucian carp has become the main type of fish in the lake. "Riffle
minnow was earlier brought up in all the river basins, but it has
emerged in Sevan for the first time and not without human factor,
I think," he said. Moreover, he said that it has become difficult to
differentiate rainbow trout and the local type of trout "gegharkuni".
