EXPERTS CALL ON POLICE TO ACTIVATE FISH CONTRABAND FIGHT

ArmInfo. Experts have called on Police to activate fish contraband
fight.
'Unfortunately, the programme on small fish outlet in Sevan could be
more effective if not the fish contraband. I saw how the contraband
trout is sold in markets', - director of Hydroecology and Ichthyology
Institute Bardukh Gabrielyan said at today's press-conference.
'It is easy to catch small fish when they grow up and find themselves
in rivers. They use many methods of illegal fishing, including electric
power', - Gabrielyan said.
He also added that it is already for many years that whitefish has
become the main bag of poachers, as its stores are at a critically
low level (just 170 tons in 2009).
'Not only Nature Protection Inspection should fight poaching but also
the Police and Administration of Gegarkunik province. The contraband
whitefish is openly sold in markets and policemen do not notice it
ir hinder sale. I think that control should be implemented at roads
as well as in markets', - he said.
According to assessment of specialists, last year the whitefish stores
in Sevan were 170-180 tons, whereas at the end of the 80-s - beginning
of the 90-s they were 30 thsd tons. The programme on small fish outlet
in the lake is implemented every year. In 2010 28.8 mln drams were
allocated from the state budget for this purpose. The total of 200 thsd
small fish were outlet in Sevan on 19 November of the current year.
