Public figures debate political prisoners' release
11:49 - 25.11.10
The authorities' recent steps to release the political prisoners show
that they are coming to senses, says former MP and recently released
political prisoner Myasnik Malkhasyan.
"The authorities are coming to senses under the pressure of the
Europeans, and they must release everybody," he told Tert.am, adding
that the prisoners were held in detention for quite a long time.
"I think it's time say good-bye to the authorities," he said.
Tigran Khzmalyan, a film director and a member of the Sardarapat
Initiative, thinks the recent release of political prisoners was due
to the pressures from foreign powers.
Speaking of the recent summit in Lisbon, he said: "This is a part of a
big game. It's a big pity that we and our guys are joining that game
under foreign forces' pressure. A government inside a country should
be pressed only by its people. But this is not the case with our
government."
Actor Ashot Adamyan believes the authorities were intimidated.
"They were intimidated because not calling these people political
prisoners doesn't mean there have been imprisoned for committing a
crime," he added.
Convicting innocent people and later releasing them is a sign of a
degrading treatment, according to Ashot Bleyan, the head of the
Mkhitar Sebastatsi Educational Complex.
"Is it trade or something like that? I think those people are being
mocked, and there is something dangerous in all this," he said.
