YEREVAN, OCTOBER 5, ARMENPRESS: There are development tendencies
in Armenia in the sphere of recovering energy, Energy and Natural
Resources Minister Armen Movsisyan said today at a briefing with
reporters during the "Week of Recovering Energy" event, adding that it
is necessary to use at least the few resources we have in the sphere
and opportunities as right and rational as possible.
He said there are 94 small and hydro power plants functioning in
Armenia, 65 of which are in the construction phase. The functioning
small hydro power plants have 124 megawatt power and this year will
produce about 395 million kilowatt/hour electricity, which is the 3%
of the inner demand of the latter. "In near future we may strengthen
our powers and bring it to 7-8%," the minister said.
Referring to using of wind energy, Mr Movsisyan said that there is a
serious investment interest: an Italian company has already received
license of building 20 megawatt power station and the construction
is in process. "We are also trying to develop sun energy which is
rather expensive, but reliable," the minister said, noting that
sun energy is not so much developed in the world. According to him,
it is mainly used for the solution of local issues.
