Boxing: Magee ready for Aramian

WITH two European title fights on the card, a first for Irish boxing,
promoter Brian Peters can expect a full house at the National Stadium
tonight.
In the main bout, Belfast southpaw Brian Magee defends his
supermiddleweight title against the German-based Armenian Roman
Aramian. It will be his first defence since winning the championship
with a stoppage in seven rounds against hometown hero Mads Larsen in
Denmark in January.
"My frame of mind could not be any better for this defence," said
Magee, a former European amateur silver medallist and four-time Irish
senior champion. "I've watched clips of some of Aramian's fights and
he's an attacking fighter, but I think my boxing skill will win."
Aramian retorted: "If Magee thinks he can put an end to my title
challenge, he is very much mistaken. I have studied clips of him in
action and while he is an impressive fighter with a crisp style, he is
not prepared for what I will bring to the fight. Wait and see."
One important factor in Aramian's favour will be his age -- he is 26,
compared to Magee's 33. While the visitor has a record of eight losses
in 38, he can point to 17 wins in his last 18. Magee, who seems to
have recaptured his old form, boasts 33 wins in 37 fights, with one
draw and should win.
In the number two bout on the nine-fight card, Spain's Kiko Martinez
hopes to win back the vacant European superbantamweight title he
originally won from Bernard Dunne in 86 seconds in 2007 when he
clashes with the French-based Armenian, Arsen Martirosyan.
