SHAKESPEARE FEST CAN BE SUSPENDED FOLLOWING FINANCIAL TROUBLES

    Armenia

"The International Shakespeare Theatre Festival after Vaghram Papazian
is being held this year in very complicated financial conditions,
and we even decided not to hold it but two very important facts made
us change our minds," told media Chairman of the Union of Persons of
Culture of Armenia Mr Hakob Kazanchian.

According to Kazanchian, the first out of two important mentioned facts
is an invitation of a famous person of the modern theater art, one of
the world's great theater producers Mr. Peter Brook to Armenia, who
will stage WARUM, WARUM play with troupe of the Zurich Drama Theatre.

"And the second one is the fact that the Festival inspired many
Armenian theaters to stage new plays featuring Shakespeare and to
premier them exactly within the framework of the Festival," said
    Hakob Kazanchian.

The International Shakespeare Theatre Festival after Vaghram Papazian
will take place in Armenian capital Yerevan from September 15 to 24
being held in assistance with the Ministry of Culture of Armenia
and the Union of Theatre Persons of Armenia. This year's festival
is dedicated to the 100th birth anniversary of Rouben Zarian, an
academician, theatre critic, a founder of the Institute of Arts of
the National Academy of Science of Armenia and a founder of the
Shakespeare Center in Armenia. The Festival will gather together
theater troupes from Armenia, Switzerland, Italy and Ukraine.

It's worth mentioning that the plays by foreign theaters will introduce
    free entrance.

Referring to the financial problems, Hakob Kazanchian said that this
year the festival wasn't included in the state budget. The fact that
last year's festival was funded by the Yerevan City Hall made hope
that this year the Mayor of Yerevan will do it again. Due to this
surety Hakob Kazanchian didn't apply to the Ministry of Culture for
    financial support.

He said that if by the end of this year it becomes clear that the
financial problems remain then festival's conducting will be suspended.
