MORE VICTIMS OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN ARMENIA

Overall, 1,206 traffic accidents have to date been registered in
Armenia, which claimed 156 lives, leaving 1,794 people injured.
As compared with last year, 166 more traffic accidents have been
registered, with eight victims and 388 people injured more, Colonel
of the RA Traffic Police Norik Sargsyan told journalists on Aug. 9.
Colonel Sargsyan said that the compulsory car insurance system
accounts for the higher number of officially registered traffic
accidents. "Previously, in the case of minor injuries the sides
involved in the road accident agreed to leave the scene. Now, however,
even cases involving slight injuries are registered by the traffic
police," he said.
Another cause of the higher number of road accidents is a larger
number of vehicles. A total of 15,428 vehicles have been imported
to Armenia this year - twice as many as last year. "Our task is to
reduce the number of victims, and we have, to an extent, succeeded,"
Colonel Sargsyan said.
This January-July, 417,457 violations of traffic rules were registered
- 5,000 more as compared with the corresponding period last year.
