YEREVAN. - The more Russia is involved in the military sphere of
Azerbaijan, the better it will contribute to security in the region,
Armenian deputy MOD Davit Tonoyan told at the interview with Mediamax.
"The exploitation of Qabala RS has a certain strategic importance
to Russia," Tonoyan told in response to the question on the position
of Armenia regarding the availability of the Qabala RS in Azerbaijan
and a possible change of its status.
"It was involved in the system of anti-missile protection of the Soviet
Union then. Currently it allows Russian Armed Forces to monitor the
situation with a wide radius. Based on the relations between Armenia
and Russia, Armenia does not accept the exploitation of Qabala RS by
Russia an activity which is against the interests of Armenia. On the
contrary, the more our strategic partner and other state-partners
are involved in the military sphere of our neighbor, the better it
will contribute to security in the region."
Russian MOD visited Azerbaijan recently to discuss issues on Qabala
radar station.
