NATURAL GROWTH OF ARMENIA'S POPULATION SLOWS DOWN 20.5%

    YEREVAN

Natural growth of Armenia's population slowed down by 20.5% to 5,359
people in the first half of this year against 6,739 in Jan-June 2010,
Karine Kuyumjyan, chief of the Armenian national statistical service's
census and demography division said Friday at a news conference.

She said that 20,102 babies were born in the country in Jan-Jun 2011 -
    4.4% year-on-year decline.

Some 444 stillbirths were registered over the mentioned period (4.5%
    increase).

Kuyumjyan said that 14,743 people died in the country Jan-Jun 2011,
while at the same period a year earlier 14,290 deaths were registered
    (3.2% growth).

"Of them 261 were babies at age one year and below - 1.2% year-on-year
increase," she said that some progress was recently seen in newborn
babies' death registration thanks to certain legislative changes.

She said there were some cases before when their death wasn't
registered at all. That is why child mortality rate grew.

Kuyumjyan also said that average birthrate was recorded at 1.6 babies
per one woman at age ranging between 15 and 49 in 2010, while at
least 2.1 babies are needed for one married couple reproduction.

Armenia had 3,266,400 permanent residents at the first half of this
    year.
