YEREVAN. - The Court of Appeals of Armenia released two young activists
of opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC), who were arrested
during the incident on August 9. The court upheld the detention of
the third activist Tigran Arakelyan, freeing Artak Karapetyan and
Sargis Gevorgyan.
Sargis Gevorgyan's lawyer Stepan Voskanyan filed a motion for change of
measure of restraint on the travel ban. In case of Artak Karapetyan
lawyer Varduhi Elbakyan filed a motion for change of measure of
restraint on bail of AMD 3 million ($ 8200), which was also approved.
Preventive measure against Tigran Arakelyan, who is accused of using
violence against a law enforcement agent (1 and 2 parts of Article
316 of Armenian Criminal Code), remained the same, because the court
did not consider the application adequately justified. Arakelyan's
lawyer Varduhi Elbakyan said she would challenge the decision in the
Court of Cassation.
Earlier Armenian News-NEWS.am informed that 7 ANC activists have
been detained on August 9, around 10:00 p.m. from Northern Avenue of
Yerevan downtown.
