European Armenians collect signatures for Tigran Arakelyan's release

    12:22 - 20.08.11

Armenian activists in Europe have started an online petition in
support of opposition activist Tigran Arakelyan who remains in
detention after a scuffle with police officers.

In a statement released on Saturday, they condemned Armenian
law-enforcement bodies for exerting pressure on opposition activists.

"We do not believe in the Police of the Republic of Armenia. We are
convinced that the arrest of the young activists has a de facto
political shade," read the statement, adding that opposition activists
have long been suppressed by the authorities in Armenia.

Further, they called on all those who would like to join their
campaign of collecting signatures by which they demand the release of
Tigran Arakelyan, can visit this web page.

"We will continue organizing collection of signatures both in the
internet and beyond it unless we have the hope that the Republic of
Armenia will be able to leave the list of the countries of the Third
    World," read the statement.

"We support young political activists to continue to defend their
Constitutional rights, to fight for the protection of the value of
their own perceptions and for their promotion," the statement added.
