Armenian police have launched an inquiry into fraud and embezzlements
in the traffic police, chief of Police Service, Alik Sargsyan, said
today. Speaking at a news conference he said he had sent the relating
criminal cases to the Special Investigation Service, specifying that
the cases involve misuse, theft of petrol and illegal issuance of
driver licenses.
Alik Sargsyan denied any personal motive behind the cases saying he
has nothing against chief of traffic police Margar Ohanian.
"Margar Ohanian and I had for many years good relations, and today
we are not enemies, there is no need, but we have revealed serious
abuses in the work of traffic police," he said.
He said the Chief Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and other
relevant services had been requested to take joint measures to check
reports about embezzlements in the traffic police having discovered
several facts, "which are not excusable and we do not hide them.'
He said Margar Ohanian will continue to work in his current capacity
because 'we have to prove whether he was aware of what was happening
in his agency or not.' Alik Sargsyan said if the investigation reveals
that he was aware and that he also used the stolen petrol Mr. Ohanian
would be called to account.
