Emil Verdyan, a life-termer who has been on a hunger-strike at
the Nubarashen prison in Yerevan for eight days, has inflicted a
self-injury thereby trying to draw attention to his problem,
Ruben Sargsyan, a member of the Cooperation for Democracy NGO, told
Tert.am. He visited Emil Verdyan the other day.
A week ago Verdyan asked to be transferred to a one-man cell, but
was denied. "The law does not envisage it," R. Sargsyan said.
As to whether Verdyan attempted suicide two days ago, R. Sargsyan said:
"I cannot say if he attempted suicide or inflicted a self-injury to
draw attention to his problem." According to him, 15 minutes later
doctors came, he received first aid and "was grateful to them."
The priority task for Verdyan is to find an experienced lawyer to
represent him at court. R. Sargsyan is going to apply to human rights
NGOs for Verdyan to receive legal aid.
