The president of the Yerevan Brandy Company (YBC) has admitted that
the official grape harvest statistics are exaggerated to conceal the
illegal production of faux-brandy.
Herve Caroff addressed the problem in 2006 at a meeting with the
then US deputy ambassador to Armenia, Anthony Geoffery, a recently
released WikiLeaks cable suggests.
"In 2005, the grape harvest in Armenia was officially 130,000 tons,
but Caroff claims that actual production was no more than 60,000.
According to Caroff, companies which have been in existence for five
or six years are selling "twenty-year old" brandy, a clear sign of
fraud," says the cable.
Carrof reportedly expressed concerns that over Russia's phyto sanitary
regulations, particularly that the Russians might decide to bar all
brandy exported from Armenia as a result of what he called look-alikes
to YBC's premium brands.
