USA TODAY announced on December 1st that Vic Darchinyan (31-1-1) is
planning on switching over to MMA. Whether he is ready for this or
not is hard to say, but he will need to gain a few pounds. Currently
fighting at 125, he would have to gain a few pounds to be at the top
of MMA's bantam weight class of 135. Not that this should be a problem,
plenty of other guys fight lighter and faster.
With a monstrous record like his, he shouldn't have too much of a
problem switching to MMA. A few months to a year of ground work,
and he might be UFC's next Junior "Cigano" dos Santos(14-1-0). Dos
Santos popped up on UFC's scene back in 2008, and since then has been
wrecking peoples days in the octagon. With a UFC record of 9-0, all
but two of which have been wins by punches, other than two unanimous
decisions, it is fairly undeniable that boxers have a chance.
According to USA TODAY, Darchinyan is being managed by the same guy
who boosted Kimbo Slice's image. Hopefully Darchinyan will stay in
longer than Kimbo did, which shouldn't be hard with Dana White not
hating him. White made no mystery of his lack of desire to have Kimbo
in his cages.
Junior on the other hand has brought him a fair amount of money. And
Darchinyan is coming in with no lack of followers. Will this lead to a
boost in MMA viewings? Maybe a larger cross over of boxers and boxing
fans? The best thing that could come out of this would be Dana White
signing Darchinyan on and giving us a 125 weight class. Either way,
everyone needs to look out for the "Raging Bull". With his horns
set on MMA, the punches are coming to the bantam weight division,
and they will be coming with a vengeance.
