Professional boxer and Bantamweight Champion Vic Darchinyan hoping
to enter MMA in 2012 - MMA News
The mixed martial arts (MMA) division has become a lucrative and
interesting professional sector for boxers and those who have been
part of combat sports in the past. Vic Darchinyan, the 35-year old
Armenian/Australian boxer has decided to enter the world of MMA this
year. He made his professional boxing debut in 2000 where he defeated
Sande Kizito in Australia.
In 2001, he defeated Kizito to win the Australian Flyweight title
and in 2002 won the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) Pan
Pacific Flyweight title. Since then he has been successfully defending
his IBF Pan Pacific title. In 2007, he won the vacant IBO Super
Flyweight title and the vacant IBF Australasian Super Flyweight title.
He faced Philippine boxer Federico Catubay at the Auburn RSL Club
in New South Wales, Australia. In May 2010, he won the vacant IBO
Bantamweight title. He defeated Eric Barcelona from the Philippines.
He lost the title later in the year but was successful in regaining
it again. The Bantamweight title-holder is anxious and eager to enter
the MMA ring to test his skills as a fighter.
Darchinyan will be facing Anselmo Moreno in California on December
3, 2011. He will be facing the Panamanian boxer, Moreno for the
unification of the bantamweight world boxing title. Darchinyan was
in California promoting his boxing fight. During a media conference
in California, he shared his views about his possible migration from
boxing to MMA.
According to Gary Shaw, the promoter for Darchinyan in the US was also
hopeful for Darchinyan's future with the MMA. He had the views that
if Darchinyan is able to defeat Moreno and wins the WBC belt, then
Darchinyan would probably look for a future in MMA as a professional
fighter. Shaw said, "Vic is serious about going into MMA after he
completes his triumph on Saturday night."
Darchinyan further explained his plans by saying that he would not
leave boxing in the near future, but has thought of entering into the
MMA cage for his first fight, which will possibly take place in 2012.
He said, "It is 100 per cent I am going to have an MMA fight next
year. I know physically I am very strong and I want to show everyone
how good I am in MMA."
His record stands with thirty-five knockouts along with thirty-seven
wins in his boxing career. If he were thinking to make a cross over
from boxing to MMA, then he would be a successful fighter for he has
powerful punches and an instinct, which has helped him attack his
opponents at the right time.
