On December 2, we learned about another death in the army. Conscript
Narek Davtyan from Gyumri was reported dead. Despiteour worries about
the plight in the army, the situation does not change. In addition,
the most irritating thing is that conscripts who die or reportedly
commit a suicide are from poor families. Let's remember some of them.
Arman Hakobyan died 11 years ago in Horadiz. The investigation is still
underway but the initial version of suicide has not been changed. The
Hakobyan family is very poor. The father of the family is a veteran
of war. Vardan Hakobyan tried to settle down in Karabakh hoping to
cope with his financial problems by farming land and animals provided
by the state. But he could not make both ends meet and returned to
Yerevan. The family survives on disability benefit.
Yurik Nersisyan, the son of a single mother, died on October 12,
2011 in NKR. The mother of the next "suicide" has no apartment. The
mother and the son dreamed of buying a house.
Three days earlier, Vladimir Asatryan "committed suicide" in an NKR
military unit called "Internat". He did not have father. He has worked
since 10 years-old and helped his mother. His brother served in the
same military unit. After Vladimir's death the political supervisor of
the unit sent him home on vacation saying: "Go and say that you will
serve in the same battalion of your brother and will sleep in his bed."
Aghasi Abrahamyan who died from severe beating first in the military
unit, then in the hospital, was from a poor family too. His parents
are divorced. He used to live in Rostov with his relatives before
conscription.
The parents of Armen Moghrovyan who died in October of this year in
Hadrut, NKR, were informed that their son underwent an operation in an
NKR military hospital but could not afford to visit their son. After
the operation, Armen was not allowed to go on a leave to recover after
the operation and returned to the military unit. Armen died a couple
of months after the operation.
Arthur Ghazaryan from Hrazdan who "committed suicide" in April 2010
lived with his father and grandmother. He lost his mother when he was
still a child, his father got married again but his step-mother died in
a car accident. They still owe for the car. It is impossible to forget
the smell of poverty in their apartment, just like the words of Vardan
Sevyan's wretched mother who said his son, who also "committed suicide"
this summer, was raised by the people because she had no money.
The defense ministry assures that death cases decreased in the army.
They explain the society's shock by the transparent activities of the
ministry of defense. We agree that this factor also plays a role. But
if the work of the officials is open, one of them should answer why
only youths from socially insecure families die in the army. What
protective role does money have in the army?
