Following the public prosecutor's announcement in September of his
opinion on who masterminded the assassination of Turkish-Armenian
journalist Hrant Dink, lawyers representing the Dink family presented
a response on Monday at the 22nd hearing of the case.
The prosecution had pointed to a cell of Ergenekon -- an organization
accused of plotting to overthrow the government -- in the Black Sea
province of Trabzon as the mastermind behind the murder, but did
not name the officials whose negligence in preventing the murder was
alleged. The Dink family's lawyers said in the court that a significant
number of public officials have not been cited for their involvement
in the preparation and perpetration of Dink's murder or for their
efforts to conceal and tamper with evidence afterwards.
Dink family lawyer Fethiye Cetin's response involved two parts. The
first part covered the questions as to who Dink was, why he was
killed and gave historical and political background of the murder. The
second part was about the negligence of public officials with regards
to the murder. Cetin discussed the lead-up to Dink's murder through
Dink's own articles, in which the writer talked about how he was being
threatened. Cetin read those articles before the court and said that
all -- from the General Staff to the judiciary and from politicians
to the media -- are responsible for Dink's murder and not naming the
offenders. The Dink family's lawyers have long held that individuals
who assumed active roles in the preparation of Dink's murder have
long remained untouched, only to be affected by the investigation
of Ergenekon.Erhan Tuncel and Yasin Hayal, defendants who have been
detained in relation to the murder case, were brought to the Ä°stanbul
14th High Criminal Court for a hearing of the case on Monday. Mustafa
Ozturk, whose trial is pending without detention was also present at
the courthouse. Dink's family did not attend the hearing.
