Yerevan Municipality and Ministry of Healthcare are yet to decide on
whether or not to dismiss a doctor sentenced for organizing the sale
of two babies.
Speaking to Tert.am, Shushan Hunanyan, the spokesperson of the
ministry, said that the Kanaker-Zeitun Medical Centre belongs to both
the Yerevan Municipality and the Ministry of Healthcare and therefore
there should be an agreed decision over the issue.
The doctor, Naira Balayan, is accused of having organized the selling
of two babies. In one case she sold the baby for $2000 and gave around
$650 to the biological mother.
On another occasion Balayan organized the sale of a new-born right
at the hospital, giving $500 to the biological mother.
It comes after a non-governmental organization called "No to the
Sale of Children" sent an open letter to the Ministry of Healthcare
and expressed concerns that Naira Balayan still works at the same
hospital after being sentenced.
"The doctor has been sentenced to two years in prison. And the court
ruled that she will serve her sentence once her daughter will turn
three years old. And the child will become three this year," explained
Shushan Hunanyan.
