Results of RF border guards work on Armenia border to be summed up
YEREVAN December 23
The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) border guard department in
Armenia on Friday will summarise the results of operational activity
of the Russian border guards for the protection of the republic's
border in the outgoing.
Head of the department Lieutenant-General Viktor Vlasov at the
traditional meeting with the media will tell reporters about their
work.
It has been announced that Secretary of the Armenian National Security
Council Artur Bagdasaryan will come to the Russian border guards.
The system of the protection of the Armenian state border with Turkey
(330 km) and Iran (45 km) has been fully preserved since the Soviet
times. The Armenian leadership considers the presence of Russian
border guards, along with the Russian military base, an important
component of the country's national security. The Russian border
guards' current presence here is based on an interstate agreement on
the status of the Russian border troops in the country, signed in
Yerevan on September 30, 1992.
The border guard department of the FSB of Russia in Armenia has four
border guard detachments - in Gyumri, Armavir, Ashtarat and Megri, as
well as a separate checkpoint at the Yerevan's Zvartnots international
airport. The two countries' governments roughly equally share the
costs of maintenance of the Russian border guards in Armenia (their
number is about 4.5 thousand men).
The Russian border guards have the task to protect the Armenian state
border with Turkey and Iran. Its border with Azerbaijan is under the
control of the Ministry of Defence of Armenia, and the border with
Georgia is under the protection of the Armenian National Security
Service.
