Some 1524 cases of illegal drug circulation were registered in Armenia
last year which resulted in the confiscation of around 127 kg of
various drugs, the Deputy Prosecutor General Aram Tamazyan said at
an extended session at the Prosecutor General's Office on Friday.
Tamazyan also said that the amount of drugs confiscated in 2009 was
around 57 kg.
According to him, the revelation of such cases, as well as the
effectiveness of the investigation of such cases was improved largely
due to the launching of the special department that deals with the
crimes of this type.
"Thanks to the personal initiative of the head of this department
and the timely measures taken on February 8, 2010, 7 kg of heroine
and 5 kg of opium, smuggled to Armenia from US and worth of $2m,
was revealed and confiscated," Tamazyan said.
Further, he said that the prosecutors sent 47 criminal cases to the
court in 2010. Those cases involved 114 citizens, Tamazyan added.
He also said that the number of the drug users is increasing year
by year, adding that last year 21 women were charged with illegal
circulation of drugs.
