A group of civilians physically assaulted the youth representatives
of the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) Abovyan Street
late on Thursday, a youth ANC activist told Tert.am.
Speaking to Tert.am, Tigran Arakelyan said that the incident took
place near the Marco Polo restaurant where the youth ANC activists
were distributing information sheets about the upcoming March 1 rally.
Karapetyan claimed that the attackers were police officers dressed
in civilian clothes. He also said that three out of the nine youth
activists involved in the distribution of those sheets were girls.
"I called the police chief of Kentron (Centre), Ashot Karapetyan,
to inform him about the crime. [While] he said 'call me later, right
they have done'," said Arakelyan.
Minutes after the spread of the news over the incident, some ANC
members had already gathered outside the Kentron police station.
Our correspondent said among them were Vahagn Khachatryan, Petrosyan
Makeyan, the leader of the Democratic Path party, and Arman Musinyan,
the spokesperson for the former president and the ANC leader Levon
Ter-Petrosyan.
Musinyan told our correspondent later that the ANC activists had been
attacked by a group of civilians who had not introduced themselves.
"The a group of police officers came up to the youth, did not
present any legal demand, tried to seize the information sheets,
then forcefully got them into the cars, where beat them and took to
the police," he said.
Later a group of ANC youth activists gathered those outside the Kentron
police station, holding posters. They later joined by Vardges Gaspari -
a member of the ANC.
Our correspondent said she tried to enter the police station and find
our the details of the incident, but was denied entry to the building
by the police officers on duty at the entrance who told her that they
had no idea as to why the youth had been brought to the police.
