EDITORIAL: Thumbs up, thumbs down
Thumbs up to Fresno State student Max Gardner, who received the 2011
Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation scholarship from
the Department of Defense. Gardner is the university's first student
to receive the award, which will cover his tuition and fees and comes
with an annual stipend of $25,000, paid summer internship,
professional mentoring and job placement after graduation. As part of
the scholarship, Gardner will serve at least two years at Edwards Air
Force Base after graduation and is required to spend one semester
working in the electronics warfare department. Gardner, a computer
engineering major from Tehachapi, competed with 4,000 students
nationwide for the scholarship, part of a Defense Department program
for students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and
math.
Thumbs down to the Transportation Security Administration, which told
a 95-year-old cancer patient she couldn't fly unless she removed an
adult diaper at the Northwest Florida Regional Airport. In this era of
terrorism, this nation must be smart about its security. TSA seems to
be going out of its way to prove that it isn't profiling passengers.
The result is poor procedures.
Thumbs up to Robyn Young, whose presentation on the Armenian genocide
-- "Debating the Armenian Question: Diplomatic Successes, Failures and
Consequences" -- earned a fourth-place finish and a $5,000 college
scholarship at the National History Day competition in Baltimore last
month. The entry by Young, a 15-year-old Buchanan High sophomore, was
chosen as the outstanding entry on an international theme, earning her
the scholarship sponsored by the History Channel.
