YEREVAN. - The center of Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC), Holy
Etchmiadzin, welcomes the decision of Georgian parliament to grant
legal status to Armenian Apostolic Church and expresses its gratitude
to Georgian President Saakashvili, who closely cooperated with
Apostolic Church on this issue, Holy Etchmiadzin spokesman Father
Vahram Melikyan told Armenian News - NEWS.am, noting that this is a
process, realized on the basis of agreement reached during the recent
visit of the Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II to Georgia.
"During the visit, His Holiness Karekin II, and Georgian President
Mikhail Saakashvili have reached an agreement to solve the problems
facing the Georgian Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church and
Armenian community in this country. The first phase was to be the
granting the legal status to AAC in Georgia. In this regard, the
Georgian parliament in several readings voted for a bill that would
grant legal status to number religious organizations operating in
the country, "said Melikyan.
