TBILISI. - President of Georgia Michael Saakashvili signed amendments
to the Civil Code that grants legal status for certain religious
organizations.
"The document was received yesterday an president signed it the same
day," the spokesperson of Georgian President Manana Manjgaladze told
Newsgeorgia agency, noting that the document has already been sent
to the parliament for its publication.
The Parliament of Georgia approved the amendments to Civil Code
on granting a legal status to religious denominations that enjoy
that status in Council of Europe Member States. At the same time the
amendments stipulate that the concordat can be issued only by Georgian
Orthodox Church.
Armenian Apostolic Church, Roman Catholic Church, the Muslim community,
the Jewish community and the Baptist Church of Georgia are granted
legal status under the provisions of the amendments.
