The Armenian Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth
has been carrying out research with the support of the OSCE Office
in Yerevan to analyze the world experience of assessment of strong
earthquakes on the environment. The results of the study were presented
in Yerevan today.
According to leading experts of the world, the natural and technical
disasters will become more frequent and more destructive in the 21st
century because of extreme urbanization and the growth of population.
Examples of this include the devastating earthquakes in Japan, Haiti,
New Zealand and other countries.
Member of the Board of the Armenian Association of Seismology and
Physics of the Earth Ashot Avanesyan presented today the possible
consequences of strong earthquakes on the environment.
The intensity of earthquakes in our region may reach 8-10, with a
magnitude exceeding 7, and we witnessed this in Spitak.
The man is unable to prevent earthquakes, but the careful and correct
attitude towards the environment can reduce the risk of damage from
seismic shocks.
