Preparations for the Pan-ACYO assembly were underway in Armenia this week.
_Pan-ACYO Assembly Begins in Armenia _
Gevork Vartanian, secretary of the ACYOA Central Council and a parishioner
at Sts. Sahag and Mesrob Church of Providence, RI, is representing the
Eastern Diocese this week at the Pan International Armenian Church Youth
Organization (Pan-ACYO) in Tsakhadzor, Armenia.
The goal of the five-day meeting is to establish a set of bylaws for the
Pan-ACYO. Participants also will have the opportunity to worship together,
share experiences from their Dioceses, and plan activities and programs that
will be carried out at the local level.
The assembly began its proceedings today, and will continue through Monday,
June 11. The sessions are being held with the blessings of His Holiness
Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians. Some 150
delegates from more than 30 countries are participating in the gathering.

His Holiness Karekin II consecrated St. Gregory the Illuminator Church in
Riga, Latvia, last month.
_New Armenian Church Consecrated in Riga, Latvia _
Last week, His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of
All Armenians, made a pontifical visit to Riga, Latvia, where he consecrated
a new Armenian Church.
His Holiness arrived in Latvia on Wednesday, June 29, accompanied by Bishop
Yezras Nersissian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of New
Nakhichevan and Russia, and other clergy. The Catholicos met with Latvia's
President Valdis Zatlers, who congratulated the Armenian community on the
construction of the new church.
On Thursday, June 30, government officials and ecumenical leaders attended
the consecration service of St. Gregory the Illuminator Church. A
celebratory banquet followed services.
Some 3,000 Armenians live in Latvia, many of them in and around Riga. The
city's Armenian community formally organized a parish in 1993, and in the
late 1990s began construction of St. Gregory the Illuminator Church=80'a
project that was completed earlier this year. Riga is also home to a large
Armenian _khatchkar_ dedicated to the victims of the 1988 earthquake in
Armenia.

_Gulbenkian Library of Jerusalem to Host Conference _
The Calouste Gulbenkian Library of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem
will host a conference on Armenian culture and art history from July 11 to
13 in Jerusalem.
The conference will feature presentations by scholars and experts on topics
relating to the development of the Armenian creative legacy between the 10th
and 20th centuries. Speakers will address the work of Armenian stone
carvers, tile artists, jewelers, printers, and manuscript illuminators,
among other artists and craftsmen who have shaped the distinctive style of
Armenian art.
Also addressing the gathering will be Archbishop Nourhan Manougian, the
Grand Sacristan of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem, and the Very Rev.
Fr. Norayr Kazazian, director of the Gulbenkian Library. The conference is
being organized by George Hintlian.

_WGCC Appoints New Executive Officers_
The newly-elected Women's Guild Central Council appointed its executive
officers during a recent conference call. The organization will hold its
first meeting at the Diocesan Center on Saturday, July 16, with Archbishop
Khajag Barsamian, Diocesan Primate, presiding.
Participants will discuss the WGCC's upcoming Fall Symposium, the Armenian
Christmas Jerusalem Pilgrimage, the Children's Armenian Sponsorship Program
(CASP), and other plans for the coming year.

_FAR Distributes Meals to Children in Kayan, Armenia_
The Fund for Armenian Relief recently helped to facilitate the distribution
of free meals to students at the Hintliyan Secondary School in Armenia's
northwestern town of Kayan, near the country's border with Azerbaijan.
The effort in Kayan-coordinated through FAR, the United Nations World Food
Programme, and the Constantinople Armenian Relief Society-is part of an
ongoing project to provide free meals to students at Armenia's border
schools.

_Western Diocese Honors Priest for 60 Years of Service_
The Rev. Fr. Zaven Arzoumanian was honored last month in the Western Diocese
of the Armenian Church of America for his 60 years of service to the
Armenian Church.
A priest in the Eastern Diocese for many years, Fr. Arzoumanian served in
Philadelphia and was the founding pastor of St. David Church of Boca Raton,
FL. He is also a distinguished historian, whose works include a continuation
of Patriarch Maghakia Ormanian's _Azgabadoum_-a history of the Armenian
Church.
The tribute evening was held on Sunday, June 26, at St. Leon Cathedral in
Burbank, CA, with Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western
Diocese, presiding.
_Jerusalem Pilgrimage Video Now Online_
A brief video clip highlighting last month's young adult pilgrimage to the

From June 1-10, a group of 34 youth leaders from parishes throughout the
Eastern Diocese made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Led by Diocesan Primate
Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, the group traced the footsteps of Jesus Christ
through Bethlehem, Nazareth, Galilee, and Jerusalem.
Under the theme `Leadership in the Light of Our Lord,' participants
experienced the great sites of biblical history, learned about the Armenian
presence in the Holy Land, and explored ways to strengthen their leadership
roles at the parish and Diocesan levels.
The group also had the opportunity to meet with Archbishop Torkom Manoogian,
the Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem, who spoke about the importance of
remaining involved in the life of the Armenian Church. Participants will
give presentations on their journey in their parishes in the coming months.
The pilgrimage was made possible through the generosity of Mr. Aso Tavitian,
who joined the group for part of the program. Also accompanying the pilgrims
was the Rev. Fr. Mardiros Chevian, dean of New York's St. Vartan Armenian
Cathedral; Oscar Tatosian, chair of the Diocesan Council; and Dr. Nicole
Vartanian, senior advisor for policy and program development at Hunter
College.

Young dancers perform during the 17th annual Children's Talent Show in
Providence, RI.
_Providence Parish Hosts Children's Talent Show _
The Cultural Committee of Sts. Sahag and Mesrob Church of Providence, RI,
sponsored the 17th annual Children's Talent Show on Saturday, June 4. More
than 40 children gave varied instrumental, vocal, and dance performances
throughout the evening.
The area's well known Nazeli Dance Group, dressed in colorful costumes,
performed traditional Armenian dances. In addition, an art exhibition
featuring student painting, drawing, and sculpture was on display in the
church's Egavian Cultural Center. The Cultural Committee hosted a reception
following the performances.
The show was organized under the leadership of Maestro Konstantin
Petrossian, director of the Cultural Committee, and Irene Eranosian, event
chair.
Many of the performers are students in the Cultural Committee's Arts
Education Program, which offers classes in art, music, song, and dance.
Janna Guegamian has chaired this unique program since its inception 12 years
ago.

_Zohrab Center Welcomes Summer Interns _
The Diocese's Krikor and Clara Zohrab Information Center has been a hub of
activity in recent weeks, as the library's doors have opened to its summer
interns.
This year's interns-Armen Bandikian, Jennifer Manoukian, and Nicole
Saglamer-are working to make the rich resources of the Zohrab Center more
accessible to individuals interested in Armenian studies around the world.
Interns are cataloging books, digitizing documents, and assisting with

The Diocesan summer camp season is currently underway with Session A of St.
Vartan Camp. In addition to enjoying an array of outdoor activities, campers
have been learning Armenian, exploring their heritage and culture, and
coming together for worship.
