TIGRAN CHUKHAJYAN'S MUSIC AUTOGRAPH CONSIDERED LOST FOR OVER 100 YEARS FOUND IN FRANCE

Tigran Chukhajyan's music autograph, which was considered lost for
over 100 years, has been found in France. The matter concerns the
operetta "Leblebiji", which received another name - "Karine" during
the Soviet years.
Actor Zhirayr Papazian, who founded the Tigran Chukhajyan Research
Center in Paris, told ArmInfo correspondent that the search for the
sheet music turned into a real detective story. The only fact known
to Papazian was that in 1904 "Leblebiji" was staged in France in the
French language. Moreover the operetta was translated into French as
"Fleur d'Orient" (Oriental Flower). Papazian said that it was found
out that the publishing house owning the sheet music was closed
after the World War II, and its archives were passed to a private
publishing house.
Papazian said that the key to the mysterious whereabouts of the music
autograph was the name of a French author, who apparently edited the
operetta together with the translator, adapting it for the French
stage. The reward for Papazyan's search was 4 dusty trunk boxes
with music sheets, two or three librettos in the French language,
and other documents with remarks made by Chukhajyan.
Now Papazian hopes that he will manage to buy out the music sheets and
present them to the composer's fund in Yerevan. "If they were in the
state publishing house, we could apply to the culture ministries of
both countries, and to the embassies or foreign ministries to help us.
However, the matter concerns a private publishing house, and the
state structures cannot do anything", he said.
The actor prefers not to publish the details of the finding until
the required funds are found. "Leblebiji" was written in 1875 and is
considered to be the most popular operetta of Chukhajyan. The premiere
of the operetta took place on November 17 1875 at "Francais" theater.
Afterwards it was successfully staged in Constantinople and
Transcaucasia.
