"MAY 28 IS A CONSTANT REMINDER OF OUR DEMAND TO RECOVER OUR HOMELANDS,
AND ALSO A TIME FOR THANKSGIVING"
Sunday 29 May 2011 was a special day of thanksgiving at the Catholicosate of
Cilicia. After the Holy Liturgy, His Holiness Aram I presided over the
memorial ceremony remembering those who gave their lives during the battle
of Sardarabad, which established the first Republic of Armenia in 1918.
At the end of the service, the clergy and the faithful walked in procession
to the Main Hall of the residence of the Catholicos to celebrate the Name
Day of His Holiness Aram I. Rev. Massis Choboyan read a message on behalf of
the Brotherhood, thanking him for his care and efforts to renew the Church
and wishing him long life.
After thanking everyone, His Holiness paid tribute to those who gave their
lives during the Battle of Sartarabad. He then said, "Commemorations are
messages and important moments of recommitment. We cannot forget the year
301 when Armenia became a Christian nation and Christian values became the
guiding principles of our lives; the year 451, in which the Battle of
Avarayr was fought to safeguard our Christian faith, reminds us how
important it is to remain firm in our Christian faith irrespective of
outside threats."
The Catholicos then continued, "The declaration of the Second Republic of
Armenia on May 28 1991 is our recommitment to our Christian Values, to the
recognition of our human rights, the Armenian Genocide and Artsakh. It is
also a moment of thanksgiving for our small Armenian Republic."
After a cultural programme, prepared by the seminarians, Catholicos Aram I
received the good wishes of the people on the occasion of his Name Day.
