Murad Bojolyan, the only political prisoner remaining in jail after
the parliament-declared amnesty, was released on Friday.
A Turkish studies expert convicted over charges of espionage, Bojolyan
was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The opposition alliance Armenian National Congress (ANC) considers
him a political prisoner.
Asked by Tert.am what served as grounds for releasing Bojolyan now
given that June 12 was reported to be his sentence expiry date,
a spokesperson for the ANC leader, Arman Musinyan, said: "Different
dates were being circulated previously, with June 10 or 13 reported
to be the possible dates. We were informed this morning that he will
be released at 2 pm today."
The ANC activist said Bojolyan was released upon the completion of
his term of sentence.
"There's no other explanation. He was not released under amnesty or
whatever," Musinyan said.
