A group of inmates at the Vardashen Correctional Facility have sent an
open letter to Hetq addressed to Minister of Justice Hrayr Tovmasyan.
To start with, the inmates write that while they are patiently waiting
for the implementation of reforms that Minister Tovmasyan had
promised, violations continue to occur at the prison.
The inmates then thank Minister Tovmasyan and President Sargsyan, as
well as the parliament for adopting the recent general amnesty that
cut the sentences of 27 inmates at Vardashen.
However, they harshly criticize the work of the local parole board
which they claim refused early parole of 29 out of 41 eligible inmates
in the past two months alone.
They also point out the fact that promises made to review less strict
protocols for some of the inmates have yet to be fulfilled.
