ARMENIAN CHURCH RELUCTANT TO ENTER SPAT WITH GEORGIA

The Armenian Apostolic Church has expressed respect for the
Georgian patriarch, following the latter's criticism of his Armenian
counterpart. "The Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin is reluctant to
comment on the statement by Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia
II on Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II," a spokesperson for
Echmiadzin, Ter Vahram Melikyan, told News.am.
"His Holiness Garegin II respects Ilia II and his experience," Meiklyan
said, adding that this completely reflected the position of of Holy
Echmiadzin on Ilia II's comments about Garegin II.
After the recent visit by the Armenian church leader to Georgia, Ilia
II said that "Garegin II is young and should gain more experience. He
is smart and in a hurry, but I told him that calmness is the best
choice."
Ilia II also said that the Georgian Church was open to all, but would
not allow oppression of the Georgian people and Georgia.
The ownership of churches and status of the Armenian Apostolic Church
in Georgia remain at the centre of a long-running dispute between
the Armenian and Georgian churches.
