under the auspices of the Greek General Consulate and Ambassador Ms.
Aghi Balta recently organized a photograhic show and presentation
by Dr Marina Mkhitaryan on Greeks of Armenia which is dedicated to
the memory of Pontic mother and in celebration of the mothers of the
Greek Diaspora. The event took place at the New York Greek Consulate
between May 2nd-16th.
GREEKS OF ARMENIA: IN MEMORY OF MY MOTHER
Photographic exhibition of Dr. Marina Mkhitaryan
Each year AGAPW will celebrate mothers of Greek descent by featuring
the body of work of artists or other professionals inspired by and
dedicated to Greek mothers and mothers of the Greek Diaspora. Their
inaugural celebration in May 2011 featured the ethnographic
photographic work of Greek Armenian Dr. Marina Mkhitaryan.
Marina, born and raised in Yerevan Armenia to an Armenian father and
a Pontic Greek mother has done extensive photographic research on the
Greek community in Armenia. Her collection of archival family photos
together with her own original photographs of Greek Armenians in their
homes, communities and classrooms, where the Greek language is being
taught, records the community's rich history and accomplishments,
their contributions to their homeland and continuous efforts to
preserve the Greek language and culture and connect to the motherland.
Marina has dedicated her work to the memory of her mother Nina Lazareva
(Lazaridou) and to all Greek mothers.
The following is an excerpt of Dr Marina Mkhitaryan's speech from
the Opening night on May 5th.
It is my great pleasure and honor to introduce the results of my three
years of research dedicated to Greeks of Armenia - in loving memory
of my Pontic Greek mother Nina Lazaridou- at the Greek Consulate
of new York. Please allow me to express my heartfelt gratitude to
Ambassador Aghi Balta for hosting our exhibit and for all her support
in this effort. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to
the Assocoation of Greek American Professional Women, its Board
of Directors, in particular to its President and Founder Dr. Olga
Alexakos and to Dr. Virginia Davies, for all their tireless efforts
to organize and make possible my travel to new York and for this
exhibition to become a reality. I would like to express my gratitude
to the cos-ponsors of the event, the Pan-Pontian Federation of USA
and Canada and its President Mr. Demetrios Molohides, the Pontian
Society of Norwalk "Pontos" and its President Mr. George Tsilfidis, to
Vassiliki Tsanaksidou and the women of the Pontian Society "Pontos",
to photographers Eleftherios Kostans and Aphrodite Navab and to all
who contributed to make this exhibit and the event tonight possible.
In 1996, while I was conducting my research in Greece, the sorrow
news about my mother's death reached me. I have visited all Greek
settlements of Armenia. My vast photo collection is a documentary
evidence of the various aspects of their life and history. My first
ethnographic photographic exhibition was opened in November of 2009
at the Greek Consulate of Greece in Yerevan, where my photos are
still in view."
After her return to Armenia, Marina is preparing a presentation
to be introduced to the Board of the Greek Federation of
Armenia "Greek Armenians and Greek Americans: new cultural
connections". Simultaneously, she is planning to organize two photo
exhibitions in Europe. Marina agrees with the Tomas Edison quote: "
'The memory of my mother will always be a blessing to me."
