YEREVAN
June 23 is the international day of Armenian book. Currently the
Ministry of Culture has focused its attention on the presentation of
the Armenian book to the world and its dissemination. Armenpress news
agency spoke with deputy minister of culture Artur Poghosyan about
the existing issues and coming programs.
- Mr Poghosyan, the year of 2012 will be of great significance for
the development of the Armenian culture, taking into consideration
that Yerevan has been declared World Capital of Book as well the 500
anniversary of the Armenian printing is being marked. What steps
is the ministry undertaking for presenting Armenian book in an
appropriate way?
- Currently all events the ministry is implementing are connected
with book, its propaganda. During the coming year we must present
to the world that Armenia is not only the country that first adopted
Christianity but that it has a great history connected with the printed
book. Events propagating books are being carried out both in Yerevan
and in provinces of the country.
- How do you signify Armenia's participation in the international
book exhibitions and fairs?
- I greatly highlight the participation of the Armenian side in such
initiatives as it gives opportunity to present to the whole world
Armenia's tradition, culture and peculiarities.
- In your opinion how is the quality of the printed Armenian book? Are
you satisfied?
- We must pay a great attention to the quality of book printed in
Armenia. I am particularly concerned with the design of books as today
they must have new cultural mentality, be presented to the people in
another way. That is why we have increased the state funded printing
of books and are implementing assistance programs.
- How do you assess the current situation of libraries in Armenia?
- I must register with delight that the program of reconstruction
of almost all the libraries will soon be accomplished. It has just
remained to repair four libraries. The reconstruction of Yerevan
Khnko Aper library and National library is under the personal focus
of President of the country.
