MOSCOW - Russia and the United States are urging the presidents of
Armenia and Azerbaijan to agree on some basic principles as a way to
start resolving their dispute over the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh.
The ethnic Armenian enclave inside Azerbaijan has been under the
control of Armenian forces since the two former Soviet republics fought
a war over the territory in the early 1990s. Talks on resolving its
final status have dragged on with little results.
The leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia are holding talks Friday in
Russia on approving a set of basic principles for negotiating a
peaceful settlement.
The White House says President Barack Obama urged both leaders to
take this "decisive step."
Russia's Foreign Ministry reinforced the message with its own
statement.
