A Bloomberg photojournalist of Armenian origin has been denied entry
to Baku upon her arrival and been deported back to Istanbul, Turkey.
According to the Azerbaijani website Contact.az, Diana Markosian,
was deported to Istanbul from Baku in the evening of June 28.
"I am extremely surprised at what happened," said Diana.
"For three weeks we had been holding talks with the Foreign Ministry
of Azerbaijan and asking for permission for my visit," Diana told
Contact.az, adding that the Foreign Ministry official asked for ten
days to solve all the issues.
"Then he asked me for a couple of documents which we provided him
with, including an official letter from the Bloomberg. After this the
representative of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said everything
would be ok and that I can come," Diana told the news website.
"But when I arrived at the airport in Baku, I was told that I am
denied entry for my origin, though I had never been to Armenia. And
the representative of Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said he can do
nothing to help me."
"Everything could be understood, including the rejection of entry, but
why promise to do what you cannot do?" Diana Markosian told Contact.az.
