Former mayor of Turkish city of Kars Naif Alibeyoglu had a meeting
with the students of University of Marmara. "Euractiv" news website
informs that the theme of demolishing the statue erected in Kars and
dedicated to Armenian-Turkish relations has been touched upon.
Alibeyoglu said that the statue described as ugly by Erdogan and the
decision to demolish it had been made by the request of Azerbaijan's
President Ilham Aliyev. He said the request would be carried out
because of the oil dependence from Azerbaijan.
Former mayor of Kars is from oppositional people's democratic party
and it was during his governance that sculptor Mehmet Aksoi was
ordered to create the statue.
Alibeyoglu, who hailed and supported Armenian-Turkish relations and
opening of the border, resigned in 2009 under the pressure of Erdogan
and 20% of Kars population.
