A throwback to the March 1 2008 incidents made Hovhanness Tamamyan,
ex- head of Chief Department for Criminal Investigation, humble.
Tamamyan finally made up mind to getting a term in prison and promised
not to resist the court's verdict. Earlier, during the preliminary
investigation, he categorically refused to give any testimonies and
promised to do that in the court. In addition, Tamamyan warned his
former leadership to hand out also others if they do not save him
from prison.
However, after President Serzh Sargsyan announced intensification
of the inquiry into March 1 incidents, Tamamyan was warned of a new
charge if he did not make up mind to his fate. The reason of that
charge could be falsification of data, which became the reason of
March 1 incidents, Haykakan Zhamanak writes.
On March 1 in the morning the tent-camp of the opposition discontented
with Feb 19 presidential election was dispersed by force from the
Liberty Square. Post-election unrest and clashes with police on March 1
2008 resulted in 10 deaths and over 200 wounded. Then president Robert
Kocharyan declared a state of emergency for 20 days. Those responsible
for the tragedy have not been revealed yet. Dozens of people were
arrested after March 1 charged with organization of mass disorders.
