"Karabakh conflict and a pressure exerted on Yerevan to solve it is
a factor that influences situation in Armenia".
Lately, Armenian authorities have made explicit attempts to build
contacts with the opposition, which has demonstrated its ability to
seriously affect the political situation in the country.
Armenian political prisoner Aram Baregamyan who was convicted for
organizing mass riots in Yerevan on 1 March 2008 was released ahead
of term on 2 May. During the 2008 presidential elections Baregamyan
led campaign headquarters of opposition candidate Levon Ter-Petrosian
in Sevan.
He was sentenced to 6 years in jail in July 2008.
Rasim Musabayov, political expert, member of the Azerbaijani
Parliament, the Milli Majlis, has commented on current public and
political situation in Armenia.
"It is noticeable that the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan and
leader of the Armenian National Congress, opposition leader, former
President Levon Ter-Petrosyan have more or less common understanding
and approach regarding the situation in Armenia, that is, they both
have something to talk about.
"Karabakh conflict and a pressure exerted on Yerevan to solve it is
a factor that influences situation in Armenia," Musabayov added.
"Opposition leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan showed that he is a serious
force on the political arena of the country and Armenian authorities
seek to find a common language with him given the coming presidential
elections.
"To do this, Serzh Sargsyan makes a curtsey to Petrosyan: he allows him
to hold rallies, releases his men from jail, tries to get compromise
from the opposition and to build a dialogue. Devastating social and
economic situation in Armenia forces authorities to seek support from
opposition," the MP noted.
"Other important issue shared by Serzh Sargsyan and Levon Ter-Petrosyan
is a striving to isolate Dashnaks headed by former President Robert
Kocharyan, who is a serious competitor for both.
"Therefore, they both need to consolidate and have a common position
on resolving the Karabakh conflict, which has primary influences on
domestic situation in the country," the expert continued.
""I think a secret dialogue between Serzh Sargsyan and Levon
Ter-Petrosyan is already underway, so it remains to see what will
happen in the end. So, mutual concessions and overtures are apparent,"
Musabayov said.
