Protest Action Tomorrow to Save Local Trees
17:21, May 3, 2011
A group of local environmental activists will be staging a protest
action tomorrow at noon in the courtyard of 106 Nalbandyan Street in
Yerevan to save trees at the disputed construction site.
The group calling itself "Our City" says in its statement that a well
beloved kindergarten, operating at the site for many years, was
recently razed to make way for the construction of a 16 story elite
building. The activists say that the high-rise will deprive residents
in surrounding homes of light and air.
Despite the fact that the Yerevan Municipality has informed the group
that the building's architectural plans have yet to be approved,
contractors have begun digging at the site, removing scores of mature
trees in the process.
