Azerbaijani Institute of History supports replacement of history
textbooks for secondary schools
Azerbaijan, Baku, May 7/ Trend, T. Hajiyev /
New studies and knowledge on the Azerbaijani history should be
included in history books, director of the Institute of History of the
Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), MP Yagub Mahmudov
said.
He said that fundamental studies on the history of the Irevan Khanate
have been recently held.
"In addition, studies have been held on the history of Karabakh and it
was proved that the Armenians are not natives of these territories.
They moved here after the Russian Empire occupied Azerbaijan.
Important documents on the history of Borchali, Derbent and South
Azerbaijan have been revealed and these documents must also be
included in the textbooks," Mahmudov said.
Today, Azerbaijan excels Armenia in the information war, he said.
"They no longer see themselves as the ancient people of the South
Caucasus. Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian said recently that
the Azerbaijani historians allegedly distort Armenia's history. We
study and demonstrate our history to all, and they are worried about
it," Mahmudov said.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are
currently holding the peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.
